Brief Overview

 

Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, also known as SDBS or LAS has the chemical formula C18H29NaO3S. It is a neutral light yellow solid and is soluble in water. It is usually produced as a mixture of related sulfonates differing only in the position of the bond between the benzene group and hydrogen chain. SDBS is not easy to oxidise and more sensitive to water hardness. Its high level of foaming abilities and compatibility with various additives makes it a major component on laundry detergent.

 

Manufacturing Process

 

Due to its wide range of the applications, SDBS have been prepared using various methods. The most commercial route is to alkylate benzene by long chain monoalkenes (e.g. dodecene) using hydrogen fluoride as a catalyst. The purified dodecylbenzenes are then sulfonated with sulfur trioxide to give the sulfonic acid. Sulfonic acid is subsequently neutralized with sodium hydroxide to give Dodecylbenzene sulfonate sodium.

 



Detergent Industry

Sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate is mainly used to produce household detergents including laundry powders, laundry liquids, dishwashing liquids and other household cleaners. When dissolve in water, it functions as an anionic surfactant as both a wetting agent or foaming agent. SDBS stabilizes water and oil and keep them from separating once mixed.  Since the surfactant's molecule attaches itself to water, grease and dirt, it is especially effective in detergent to loosen dirt for easier cleaning.
